As we move through the early years of the 21st Century, school counselors face the challenges of preparing students to meet the higher expectations of the Wisconsin State Academic Standards to become productive and contributing members of society.
The Portage High School Counseling Curriculum was expanded in Spring 2010 to include activities presented systematically through classroom lessons, large and small group activities, school presentations, community events, and parent conferences/workshops. The curriculum is organized around three developmental areas:
Topic themes in the above developmental areas include: academic support, career awareness, career exploration, career preparation/planning, career management/life-long learning, character education, communication skills, cultural competence, goal setting, protective behaviors, school safety, self-knowledge, self-management, social skills, study skills, and transition from middle school to high school and from high school to college/career.
